The Ultimate Defense Against Corrosion

Corrosion is the silent enemy of reinforced concrete and steel structures—relentlessly attacking reinforcing bars, steel components, pipelines, and structural elements, compromising integrity and shortening service life. In the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, where structures face some of the most aggressive environments on earth—coastal saltwater that penetrates concrete, industrial chemicals that accelerate deterioration, and harsh climatic conditions that stress materials—corrosion poses one of the greatest threats to infrastructure durability. At Arabian Strengthening & Protection Co., we deliver the ultimate defense against corrosion: cathodic protection. This proven electrochemical technique actively stops corrosion at its source, protecting reinforcing steel in concrete and steel structures from the relentless attack of chlorides, moisture, and oxygen. Unlike passive coatings or sealers that merely delay deterioration, cathodic protection provides continuous, active protection that extends asset life by decades, transforming the economics of infrastructure ownership and ensuring that critical assets remain safe and serviceable for generations.

The Challenge of Corrosion

Corrosion of reinforcing steel is the leading cause of concrete deterioration in aggressive environments. Chloride ingress from de-icing salts, marine environments, or industrial processes penetrates concrete, breaking down the passive layer that protects steel reinforcement. Carbonation occurs when carbon dioxide reacts with concrete alkalinity, reducing pH and initiating corrosion even in the absence of chlorides. Once initiated, the electrochemical reaction causes corrosion when anodic and cathodic sites form on the steel surface, creating a flow of electrons through the steel and ions through the concrete. The consequences are severe—rust occupies up to six times the volume of the original steel, causing expansive cracking, spalling, delamination, and progressive structural deterioration. Traditional repair methods—removing and replacing deteriorated concrete—address the symptoms but not the underlying corrosion process. Without active corrosion control, the deterioration continues, requiring repeated repairs and ultimately threatening structural integrity.

What is Cathodic Protection?

Cathodic protection is an electrochemical technique that controls corrosion by making the steel reinforcement or steel structure the cathode of an electrochemical cell. By applying a small electrical current or connecting sacrificial anodes, the corrosion reaction is suppressed, preventing the loss of metal. In reinforced concrete, corrosion occurs when steel reinforcement acts as both anode and cathode, with ions flowing through the concrete. Cathodic protection interrupts this process by supplying electrons to the steel through an external circuit, making the entire steel reinforcement a cathode—the protected element—and preventing the anodic reaction that causes metal loss. This stops active corrosion regardless of chloride concentration or concrete condition, providing protection that passive coatings cannot achieve.

Two primary cathodic protection systems are available. Impressed Current Cathodic Protection (ICCP) uses an external power source to drive current through inert anodes to the reinforcing steel. These systems are ideal for large structures, areas with high chloride levels, and complex configurations requiring adjustable, long-term protection. Components include rectifiers, inert anodes, reference electrodes for monitoring, and wiring. Sacrificial Anode (Galvanic) Systems use more active metals such as zinc, magnesium, or aluminum that corrode preferentially to protect the steel. These systems require no external power source and are ideal for smaller structures, localized protection, and areas with limited power access. They are maintenance-free and self-regulating.

Our Cathodic Protection Services

We offer a complete range of cathodic protection solutions tailored to each structure’s unique requirements. Impressed Current Cathodic Protection provides active corrosion control for large structures such as bridges, parking structures, marine facilities, industrial complexes, and high-rise buildings. These systems offer adjustable output, suitability for high-chloride environments, and long service life. Sacrificial Anode Systems deliver maintenance-free protection for smaller structures and localized repair zones, ideal for localized repair zones, small bridges, pipelines, buried structures, and marine piles.

Discrete Anode Systems use small, localized anodes installed within repair zones or high-risk areas to provide targeted corrosion protection where it is most needed. These systems are ideal for parking structure spall repairs, balcony and exposed element repairs, column and beam repairs, and localized high-corrosion areas. Thermal-Sprayed Coatings provide both barrier protection and cathodic protection for large-area steel and reinforced concrete structures. Thermally sprayed metallic coatings of zinc, aluminum, or zinc/aluminum alloys are applied to the structure surface, ideal for steel bridge structures, large reinforced concrete structures with distributed corrosion, and marine and coastal infrastructure.

Cathodic Protection for Pipelines & Buried Structures protects underground assets from soil-side corrosion, including water transmission pipelines, oil and gas pipelines, buried storage tanks, and grounding systems. Cathodic Protection for Marine Structures faces the most aggressive corrosion environment—saltwater, tidal cycles, and marine growth—protecting concrete and steel docks, quay walls, jetties, marine terminals, and offshore platforms. Corrosion Monitoring & Control Systems ensure ongoing performance through reference electrodes, data loggers for continuous recording, remote monitoring for web-based access, and automated control for system adjustment.

Application Areas

Our soil injection and ground stabilization services address a wide range of ground conditions and structural needs across the Kingdom. For building settlement, we use compaction grouting and underpinning to correct settlement, restore level, and prevent further movement. For equipment foundation settlement, we apply compaction grouting and jet grouting to restore alignment and ensure operational continuity. For loose or soft soils, we employ permeation grouting and jet grouting to improve bearing capacity and support heavier loads. For sinkholes and voids, we use compaction grouting and chemical grouting to fill voids, prevent collapse, and restore stability. For water control, we apply chemical grouting and permeation grouting to stop water flow and reduce permeability. For excavation support, we use jet grouting and permeation grouting to stabilize excavations and protect adjacent structures. For seismic mitigation, we employ compaction grouting and jet grouting to reduce liquefaction risk and improve seismic performance. For historic structure stabilization, we use permeation grouting and micro-piles to preserve historic fabric while stabilizing foundations with minimal disturbance.

Our Methodology

We follow a systematic, multi-stage approach to cathodic protection that ensures effective design, proper installation, and long-term performance. The process begins with assessment and design, where we conduct corrosion assessment including half-cell potential mapping, chloride analysis, and carbonation testing; structure evaluation including condition assessment, reinforcement location, and repair history; system selection based on structure, environment, and client needs; and detailed design including anode layout, wiring design, power requirements, and monitoring systems.

Our skilled technicians then execute installation with precision and attention to detail, installing anodes in drilled holes, surface-mounted, or embedded in repair mortar, routing wiring with careful attention to aesthetics and durability, installing reference electrodes and monitoring points, and installing rectifier and control equipment. Before system handover, we verify performance through comprehensive commissioning, including continuity testing to ensure proper connections, potential measurements to verify protection levels, system adjustment to achieve optimal performance, and baseline documentation for future monitoring. We provide ongoing support to ensure continued system performance through regular potential monitoring, system performance verification, remote monitoring where installed, and periodic system adjustments as needed.
